During their first year of the Bachelor of Art and Design degree, our students take on a two-week component called 3D Scripting: Introduction to Programming, which is designed to give them an introduction to programming through the development of basic scripting skills using Maya’s embedded scripting language (known as MEL). Most of Maya's UI is coded in MEL, which is why it is essential for any professional 3D Animator has an understanding as to how it works.
Each student works on their own individual component and uses their critical thinking skills to develop, test and refine their own scripting solutions to a problem that they have thought of.
One of our very talented first-year students took this opportunity to create a penguin generator, where you can select the name and colour of your penguin, as well as add some other delightful accessories for your new flightless bird friend.
