This is an isosurface of current density colored by the particle density, while the side panels are simply the current density. The electron current sheet that is produced during the development of reconnection is breaking up into filaments in 3D, and this leads to the creation of "flux ropes" in which the magnetic field lines begin to wrap around the current filaments. After Daughton et al., 2011, Role of electron physics in the development of turbulent reconnection in collisionless plasma, Nature Physics, TBD.
