UCLA Library hosted this presentation on the state of the 3D printing industry, given by Doug Daniels on November 17th, 2015. Doug recently attended EuroMold, an international conference on the 3D printing industry, in Düsseldorf, Germany. As the Library explores ways in which to offer 3D printing services to its campus community, Doug went to EuroMold with the goal of learning as much as possible of the state of the industry, its current applications, and where the industry is headed. He addresses a wide range of topics regarding 3D printing, including:

· Why has 3D printing all of a sudden become so widespread?
· What is the current state of the industry both at home and abroad?
· What are the current breakthroughs in the aerospace, medical, and materials science fields?
· Where is the 3D printing industry headed? What does the future of 3D printing look like?
· And much more!

Doug Daniels has been an employee of UCLA Library for over two years, first as a student working for CLICC as a Helpdesk Specialist, and most recently as a full-time employee in the Library’s IT department. Part of his daily duties is to help support the Library’s instructional spaces. Doug is also part of a team that is constantly looking for new and better ways to provide our campus with the tools it needs to continue to thrive as one of the world’s premiere academic research institutions. In addition to spearheading the Library’s 3D Printing Pilot Program, Doug has also helped facilitate video and audio kits for students to check out, and is also working on making the Library’s laser etcher available for our campus to use.
