CW / TW: Brief mentions of fire & death.
A majority of 3D printers are inspected, tested and safe for home use. Recently a lawsuit was filed in CA against Alibaba & Tronxy 3D printers. It alleges that Alibaba sold a defective Tronxy that burned someone to death.
These 3D printer fires are rare, but dramatic when they make the news. The leading cause of these fires is thermal runaway. This happens when the printer overheats and does not shut down safely.
To prevent this, 3D printers are suppose to have thermal runaway protection installed in the hardware & firmware of their 3D printers. In 2016 the Arnet A8 printers generated a lot of negative publicity after a few of their printers caught on fire. The cause was sloppy coding, where the runaway protection was not coded into the printer.
