UPDTAE 4/24/20
• New UPDATED mask design has been added to the GiveWaveStudios.com site ... www.https://www.givewavestudios.com/freebies/
Upgrades include:
• Newly designed shape with less parts for faster printing & to fit face better overall
• Enlarged intake grill for better airflow
• Rounded off nose bridge area for a more universal fit
• Mk4 version for "as is" 3d printed use & Mk5 version is better suited for casting & moulding
• Silicone Gasket 2 part 3d mould to create sealing edge ( see youtube.com/watch?v=6_4gcWX3BhQ&t=8s for mask mould making & casting ) Our designs are different and a bit more streamlined & ergonomic but process sgould be similar for making these out resin/silicon.
UPDATE 3/31/20
• The use of polypropylene fabric has tested just as good as MERV13 filters, & in some instances better than Vacuum HEPA filters. Surgical wrap from hospitals work well also ( but are bit harder to breathe through for extended periods of time ) with the current design of this mask. Version 2.o should allow for better airflow stay tuned.
• The lowellmakes.com/covid-19-response gets updated every couple of days for more current info.
UPDATE 3/24/20
We currently have:
• 2 masks at LGH going through infectious disease and fit testing. Their Chief Medical Officer Dr Arthur Lauretano is involved now so this will hopefully get done real soon this week. If we pass the fit test the next step is to get some sort of approval to ship them their first 100 masks to go to the ER team. From there we will plan to ship another 250 for the ER/ICU teams across the entire campus
• 1 mask being actively used by a respirator therapist at Lahey Hospital HAS passed fit testing (this is BIG!). They are working on showing it to more people and help with validation. They want 100 masks
• 20 masks were sent to St. Vincent hospital today, some going in for infectious disease and fit testing and to work out how to sterilize them. They came back with this update already: "PLA and PETG can both be sterilized using the Sterrad sterilization processor which uses a hydrogen peroxide vapor and gas. There is also a study out there in a dentistry journal of using 3D printed items in surgical procedures. PETG is commonly used in disposable surgical devices. This is great news. A Lahey Hospital Respiratory Therapist did a fit test with one of your masks and passed. Putting in a MERV 13 or MERV 16 filter puts all of this on the map to acceptance in a hospital setting.
• 2 masks are being picked up by Tufts Medical Center for infectious disease for fit testing.
