Before we can do outdoor augmented reality we have to create a 3D point cloud of an existing environment. In this example, we do it for the roman amphitheater in Avenches, Switzerland. The point cloud is made out of several videos with different mobile phones that should cover a wide range of illumination conditions. In our point cloud editor, we filter out features points that were not visible in multiple videos. Because 3D point clouds from monocular cameras have an arbitrary scale we have to transform them to the correct position, rotation and scale. A good point cloud should lead to a stable augmentation of the 3D object. No marker is needed for this type of AR.
