#367: Characterizing the key-up frequency transient on an Alinco DR-135 Mk III 2m radio with an RSA w2aew 2023-04-09 | A fellow ham reported some transient interference coming from a local digipeater that was using the Alinco DR-135 2m FM transceivers. He found that they had a significant frequency instability at key-up, and asked me to verify and document this in a video. This video takes a look at two different DR-135 rigs. I also take a look at an older Kenwood TM-231A and an Icom rig for comparison. It is clear from this video that the Alincos definitely have a serious frequency instability upon key up of the transmitter. A Tektronix RSA306B and the companion SignalVu-PC software is used to characterize the units.

#341: Ham tip: Safely using a coax switch to connect multiple rigs to a single antenna system w2aew 2021-10-31 | This video answers the question - "Can an antenna switch be used in reverse, to switch multiple radios into a single antenna system and, is it safe?" The answer is - YES, in most cases - as long as the switch grounds the unused inputs, which is usually the case. The video takes a look at the numbers, describes how much isolation is needed, and then shows how to measure the isolation using a NanoVNA, and finally shows the results using a couple of HF radios. #339: Basics of a Super-heterodyne Receiver - how it works, and a peek at the signals w2aew 2021-10-14 | This video presents the basics of the superheterodyne receiver, and the function of each of the blocks. The operation of the frequency conversion in the mixer and the job of the IF filtering stage are described and demonstrated on an actual radio. #338: Probe Tips: Beware of capacitive loading of oscilloscope probes on your circuit operation w2aew 2021-10-06 | The capacitive loading of your oscilloscope probe might affect the operation of your circuit - certainly something to keep in mind when probing around. The test circuit used in this video is shown at 11:08 in this video:youtube.com/watch?v=G9zZRNzhsEE&t=668s...and I'm probing across Cs in the lower left corner of the schematic.1X passive probe can have 100pF or more of capacitive loading which can dramatically affect many circuits. 10X probes are typically 8-15pF or so, with some exceptions. Active FET probes offer very low capacitive loading, typically under 1pF.
