Just playing around and learning a bit more in DaVinci. Decided to make this to demonstrate the principal of optical sound. The slit lens is only an approximation of what the solar cell would "see" as the film is rolls steadily past the sound aperture and this effect was done using a single line of each frame. As you can see the is considerable definition in the waveform that is not demonstrated in this manner.

Lasered Norwegian subtitles.
This one is a bit bouncy, 1994 was still in the era of acetate and I think it might be shrinking a tiny bit, it wouldnt sit straight in the gate like polyester prints do and looked a little bit curly as it was travelling across rollers. It doesnt smell at all thankfully. I have been looking into making a gate that will provide slight pressure across the film plane against a fixed stop for shrunken prints.")

DTS Sonic Landscape flat aspect, full frame scan with not one but two groovy ATLAB countdowns in varying levels of print exposure for some reason. This was used at a cinema I worked at. I think the second countdown was just slug to make it back to the platter.")

Sync sound reprint with English intertitles.
Negative print through edge code seems to be circle circle circle: 1928/1948
Release print stock looks like circle semi circle (Canadian?) 1927, 1938 or 1949.
Dating this one was difficult. My initial guess was that this was possibly from a 1949 international re-release, however I was not sure how well received a German film would have been during this time period.
I was ready to assume it was a 1938 print until I discovered the songs used in this clip, Sidney Torchs The Duel was not recorded until 1947 so it is indeed 1949.
After further reading my assumption is that this is possibly from the Australian 1950 National Films release of the 1948 Associated British Pictures Corporation version of the film which is backed up fairly well by the edge codes. As far as I can tell this version has never been released on home video and only a few copies may still exist.
The original silent frame rate has been maintained on 24fps sound film by printing every second frame twice.
As with many early reprints of this movie the source picture elements are very badly scratched and worn.")

Im still learning to deal with the quirks of the Raspberry Pi camera and the auto exposure going nuts is very obvious (and annoying) here. Soundtrack is pretty average unfortunately.")
