As you can plainly see, emulsion lines plague the tail end of this print. But, if I’m being completely honest, they’re outshined by the stunning crispness and vitality of the print itself, holding up remarkably well from ‘96.
The film is not rated, hence the absence of an MPAA rating tag, but I was personally hoping to see the Universal Studios Hollywood tag, which sadly either 1) was not on the print or 2) was but the projectionist cut the bulb before we could see it.

Went digging through my rusty old Dell Inspiron and found this little gem of a thing. Holy HELL do I miss the Maxi-Saver 12. I mean, the Century Square Luxury Cinemas that now occupies the old space is cool and all, but its got nothing on this place. Im serious. Its stuff like this that makes me wish time travel to the past was possible.
The equipment utilized was all 35MM (as is probably obvious by the ridiculous amount of scratches on the ident) and its preceded by a 35MM trailer for Here Comes the Boom, and followed by a 35MM trailer for Despicable Me 2. The movie we were seeing was ParaNorman.

This took way longer than it should have, but I hope it satisfies.
Obviously, with this being a UK-struck print, there is no MPAA rating tag at the tail; instead, right after the DreamWorks Animation logo, the tail leader is simply displayed.
And that cue mark video will be out before Friday. I have been caught up with so much recently, but I finally have time to plunge back into my usual YouTube shenanigans. :)

(This video ended up having a pretty jarring flicker effect. My apologies. Hopefully it still comes through pretty clear for you folks.)
So here it is, gang, the ending of the limited 70mm release print of Todd Phillips masterful Joker! Exceptional film, and kudos to the absolutely amazing Gateway Film Center in Columbus for having the chops to screen it in such a format.
Unlike the 70mm releases of Dunkirk and Ready Player One, this print actually has an MPAA rating tag. Funnily enough, it seems Warner has used the same rating tag style utilized for the 35mm release of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, where the R rating appears nice and big without the rating reason specified. Im guessing this is some sort of a trend for the major Hollywood studios...? No tail leader shown onscreen, too, which is to be expected, especially for a 70mm showing.
So, heres a little something interesting... I got to the theater early, because its a Saturday night and you know how busy the multiplex can get on a night like that. I talk to someone who I assume is one of the managers of the place... super nice dude and knowledgeable about cinema. He knows Im here from Pittsburgh to see this 70mm screening of the film so gives me an offer to check out the projector booth briefly... which may or may not have made me incredibly giddy. The 70mm projector system was quite tremendous and a beaut of a thing. 3-tier platter system and Simplex projector. For what its worth the theater also has two 35mm projectors (one in auditorium 2, another in auditorium 4). The booth was a little narrow but one hell of a magical place and Im one lucky man to see the physical 70mm print of Joker in all of its glory. Unfortunately I was unable to get any pictures but if anyone has any questions about the booth/print I can attempt to answer them to the best of my ability!

For Christmas, I got a StarTech HD Capture Device that captures HDMI-enabled devices at resolutions up to 1080p. The thing works like a charm. If I have any complaint, its that I wish HDCP protection bypass was included built-in into the device. I had to fix it up the hard way by buying an HDMI splitter on Amazon.com which supposedly bypass the whole HDCP nonsense. Now that Im able to capture HDMI devices problem-free, the chance of videos being uploaded on this account are increased!
To test out how well YouTubes compression algorithms handle my HDMI captures, I figured why not snap a DVD walk-through of my favorite Christmas movie; The Polar Express. Mind you, Im able to capture Blu-ray discs on this thing without issue, but the Blu-ray menu for The Polar Express lacks music and is only a simple list of a menu, making it very lackluster. Ill eventually upload some Blu-ray menu walkthroughs of other films though for your viewing pleasure.
This is really nothing more than simple filler for my account, but I hope you enjoy nevertheless!")

So a couple years ago, my MacBook Pro in which most - if not all - of my 35MM and theater-recorded content abruptly shut down and ceased all operation one day while in its charging state. I tried removing the charger and plugging it back in, booting it back up, resetting the SMC... all to absolutely no avail. My archival MacBook had shit itself. Understandably, I panicked, because if theres one thing a 35MM enthusiast with all of the archival content in the world never wants to let go of, its his memories from years past. Thus, I left myself in a state of depressiveness ever since then, filled with doom and gloom and the supposed fact that all of my 35MM / theater data was now bye-bye thanks to my dated, aging MacBook that finally gave up.
Or so I thought.
This morning I received a bit of assistance from a good colleague of mine who knew a thing or two about computers, more so than I. He told me a little something about a SATA adapter, in which you disassemble the hard drive from the computer regardless of corruption and plug the drive into another computer to restore your files from a crappy computer to a much more cleaner computer (the Lenovo Yoga 730 I am currently uploading this here video on). Intrigued, I place an order for a SATA cable to a nearby Best Buy, pick it up at the curb (thanks, COVID-19, for preventing me from being in-store), and bring it home. With my dead MacBooks hard drive removed and in tow, I plug the SATA cable from drive to Lenovo, and POP! appeared all of my old files. And to think that I was considering taking this thing into my local Apple Store. My dreams and happiness of being able to share my treasure trove of 35MM goodness are now restored because of my amazing friend who just saved me $500 and my faithfully restored hard drive that didnt go out like my MacBook did. So now I can concur that the ultimate issue with my old computer was the system itself and it did NOT affect the hard drive, and thank Celestia for that.
With this all in mind, Im ramping up my uploading of 35MM / in-theater recorded content, regardless of how petty or silly a certain video of mine may seem. This is all ARCHIVAL - I was (heaven forbid) smart enough to carefully set a footnote in theatrical memory making thats more visible than just a brainstormed mind cloud. About 30% of this content on my hard drive is currently on YouTube. Now its my job to keep these captures in a safe place so nothing bad ever happens to them again. Lets hope I dont screw this whole thing up.
But onto this video!
Heres the 2013 Universal Pictures logo in all of its 35MM analog glory. I know, its vertical video; I was in a very dark room with about three other people, so I had to do the best I could. How you can tell its from a film print; the slightly higher-pitched analog audio track, barely visible (but still visible) black specks, etc. For the curious, this was taken from a 1:00 showing of Ouija (2014) on October 26th, 2014. The theater is the great Rave Pittsburgh North 11, which very sadly closed in May of 2015 after the comeuppance of the shiny Cinemark North Hills and XD just a couple minutes away. Its too bad. This theater was awesome. Old, but it had a character to it and was the last true 35MM outlet in Pittsburgh. I wish I could go back to it. Ill never forget the last night I was there. More on that in a later video, but it was both magical and sentimental.
More videos to come! I think now more than ever its important to have these sorts of videos because to me they emulate the amazing experience of going to the movies. Of course, right now that experience has been shunned by COVID-19, hence why videos like these mean so much to me. Theyre a seamless simulation of sitting in a dark theater and being blessed by a screens magic. You cant replace that.
