Chief Gail Schmidt has taken her expertise writing satellite software for the U.S. Geological Survey and brought that wealth of knowledge straight to Rockerville Volunteer Fire Department in Rapid City, South Dakota. It's an unlikely overlap: the same eye she uses to read satellite imagery of a landscape before and after a fire is the same instinct she brings to the fire line.
