John Locke's journey on #LOST is one filled with sadness and tragedy. His first theme, already hinted at in the opening moments of "Walkabout", is most commonly known as "Locke'd Out Again"... or, simply, Locke's "sad theme". But throughout the show, the theme is also made to sound triumphant (like at the end of "Walkabout"), aggressive (when Locke pulls Boone from the Beechcraft in "Deus Ex Machina"), joyful (when Locke and Eddie arrive at the commune in "Further Instructions") and intense (when Emily Locke reveals her son's name in "Cabin Fever").
While Locke's first theme represents his tragic life in general, more specifically, it's used to represent the events of "Deus Ex Machina" and the night of Boone's death - a significant day within the story of the show, often referred to even in later seasons. When Locke brings up this night to Sawyer in "The Little Prince", his theme sounds downright casual as Locke plainly concludes, "I needed that pain to get to where I am now".
Locke's theme features four four-note phrases, paired with an eight-note ascending melody - perhaps to reflect Locke's literal "ascension" when regaining the use of his legs after the crash of Oceanic flight 815.
Over the course of the show, the theme inspires several other Locke-related themes, including Locke's 'destiny' theme (4x11), Locke's flashsideways theme (6x01) and even the Man In Black's theme (6x01).
