Could you build an entire camping outfit in just 30 days... using simple materials and forgotten hobo ingenuity?
Welcome to The 30-Day Hobo Challenge!
For the next four weeks, I'll show you how to build a complete low-cost camping outfit inspired by the resourcefulness of the classic American hoboes. Each project uses inexpensive materials, practical outdoor skills, and time-tested techniques that almost anyone can make at home.
In this first episode, we'll build a traditional-style Hobo Pack Sack from an ordinary pillowcase, cotton clothesline, and a few simple supplies. If you'd like to dress it up, I'll also show you how to add brass grommets for a more finished look.
This isn't about pretending to be a hobo. It's about learning practical outdoor skills, becoming more self-reliant, and discovering just how little you really need to enjoy the outdoors.
The 30-Day Hobo Challenge
đ Week 1: Build the Hobo Pack Sack
âş Week 2: Build and Waterproof the Hobo Tent
đď¸ Week 3: Build the Hobo Sleeping Bag
â Week 4: Build the Hobo Cook Kit & Coffee Pot
đĽ Final Challenge: Spend the night outdoors using nothing but the gear we've built together!
I'd love for you to build along with me. If you make your own pack, share a photo in the comments or on social media on my WayPoint Survival Facebook page or on my WayPoint Survival Instagram Page using #30DayHoboChallenge. I may even feature viewer projects in a future episode!
I'm also excited to announce that I'll soon be offering a Modern Hobo Survival Course at the WayPoint Survival School, where we'll put these same skills into practice in the field.
If you enjoy bushcraft, survival, historical camping, forgotten outdoor skills, DIY camping gear, and learning practical ways to enjoy the outdoors on a budget, you're in the right place.
