April, 15 2026 marks three years since what has been dubbed as the “Forgotten war” first broke out in Sudan.

Two army generals – the Sudanese Armed Forces’ leader General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and Mohamed Hamdan ‘Hemedti’ Dagalo, leader of the para-military Rapid Support Forces – have plunged the African nation into the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.

OkayAfrica speaks with Sudanese American analyst Aida Abbashar and Sudanese documentarian Ala Kheir about the history behind the conflict and the heavy toll it has taken on the people of Sudan.
