Hello Everybody in this video I am going to talking about 3 ways perfectionism stops me from progressing and is slowing me down in life, but I am also talking about how I am gonna try and fix it. I am trying to stop being such a perfectionist so I can create more and stop wasting time.
1. It stops me from creating and doing. Whenever I have these ideas that I think will be really good in the moment, I start to think about them way too much. I think how can I make this the best it can possibly be. This is not always a bad thing but for me it causes me to not create a video or project or expand that idea. I think that maybe I should wait because I could make that better in the future or I’d be better at doing this if I had that and all these other excuses because I think it’s not gonna be good enough right now. Perfectionism doesn’t make me feel like I’m not good enough but what I create is not good enough and I know what I create is not a definition of me. I will use my YouTube channel as an example of this. I always get so many video ideas and in the moment of that idea I want to create it so bad and I get so excited but then when I really start thinking about it all these variables going to my head of how it could be better if I had something else or if I was a guy at a different stage of my life and all these other excuses. So then I normally write the idea down and end of not creating, Progressing, doing, And basically becoming better. It also puts me in a learning pit and trap because I think if I know this or know that and know more about this topic then I can create it or do it.
So in this next stage of YouTube for me, I’m gonna try and get that out of my head and not worry about something being perfect so I can create more and get stuff done.
2. It is very discouraging. No seriously! When I do get past the fact of not creating something and I create something, then I can have these high expectations of what I create. This leads me to think about how I could’ve made it better and I'm not very satisfied with my creation in the end. Perfectionism often is a mindset of high expectations even when knowing they can’t be mad you realize it’s not even close to that.
3. It causes me to procrastinate. For example, with school and something I have to do and isn’t my choice if I do it or not I end up thinking for so long and how I can make this the best it can be and I know this is not a bad thing but it stopped me from starting and causes me to waste a lot of time. What gets me to create amazing things in the first place is just starting and once I get going, more ideas start flowing and I start to create something. And creating something knowing you worked hard to make it the best you can is so rewarding and it is an incredible feeling. Obviously creating something, is better than nothing. “Creating something that is Just good, is better than thinking about creating something that is perfect.”
So what am I going to do about? Well, I am going to force myself to practice just starting on something because I really start to worry about doing really good when I stop and think about it. I am going to try and lower my expectations bar to the point where I am not afraid to just create something and then I can't get so discouraged because I do not have such high expectations of what I would hope it would be.
Question of the Day:
Do you struggle with trying to make something to good where it is slowing you down? Or do you think you need to try and put more effort into things? Or maybe you are doing great and have good balance. Let me know in the comments below, I would love to hear from you.
