I recently went to go see my favorite guitarists Michael Schenker on his "My years with UFO" tour and I was able to steal a few great ideas from that concert. For years I wondered how he created some of his sounds and now I truly think I've figure it out. His specific sound seems to be created by combining pentatonic base ideas with dorian and mixolydian.
