16:56 - Step 3: The biggest secret to 6/8 mastery…
18:11 - Playing 6/8 songs with a SWUNG feel…
If you’re a new church drummer, then all of the 6/8 songs you’re faced with on a weekly basis (like Great Are You Lord, How He Loves, or Reckless Love) might be tripping you up more than you feel like they should.
If you struggle to sound as smooth & natural in 6/8 as you do in 4/4, and you feel like an incomplete drummer with a big “hole” in your skill, then today’s lesson is for you!
I get it! When I got started playing in church as a total beginner, I was scared to play fills in 6/8 because it was too easy to lose track of where the one was. I was terrified of not knowing when to end a fill… and therefore train-wrecking the band.
BUT… It doesn’t have to be this way.
We assume that the key to playing in 6/8 is playing a lot of 6/8 grooves and getting good at counting to 6 instead of 4. BUT if you’re having to count, you’re probably not sounding very good. The secret to mastering 6/8 starts before you even sit down at the kit.
Today I’m teaching you 3 steps for getting comfortable with 6/8 so that you’re not counting, you’re feeling the groove, and you’re musically leading the band so that you all sound awesome leading your congregation in worship. YOU CAN DO THIS.
