Do you ever feel that you want to make art but the idea of trying to paint a landscape or a portrait or a still life seems too challenging? For me, the answer is to make something abstract that follows simple rules, then when I'm done I feel more confident to tackle the project I wanted to try to start with.

While doing exercises like these, you learn so much about your paints, the colours, consistency, your brush control and about composition and creating visual interest. Plus, I love the outcome, the colour transitions and the range of values and tones, and the way these patterns create a sense of movement across the page.
