The same standard shoe last can be customized in three completely different ways, depending on the footwear you want to make.

For barefoot shoes, we customize the last to create the characteristics that make the footwear barefoot: a zero-drop construction and a wide toe box shaped according to the actual measurements of your feet. It is not simply making the last wider.

For cowboy boots, the customization is different because we are working with a slip-on boot. Besides adjusting the width according to the foot measurements, we need to pay particular attention to the short heel measurement. This is what helps the foot slide into the boot properly while keeping the instep securely in place once the boot is worn.

And then we have bespoke shoe last customization. Here, we take the standard last and adjust it according to the complete measurements and individual characteristics of the foot—whether the feet are narrow or wide, or whether there are particular areas that need additional adjustment.

All three are shoe last customization, but they serve different purposes.

And this is why I don't recommend simply taking a standard shoe last and making random changes to it. First decide what footwear you want to make, understand what the construction requires, and then customize the last accordingly.

I teach all three approaches in my shoemaking courses, including barefoot shoes, authentic cowboy boots and bespoke Derby shoes.

The right shoe last is the foundation, and the right customization gives you a much better starting point for the shoes you want to create.
