The C64 Mini only has an HDMI port but that doesn't mean you are limited to only modern TVs. Several adapters exist that can convert the signal to something other than HDMI.
Editor's note: The square (4:3) monitor I tested on did not have the resolution to display the converted VGA signal correctly because the maximum resolution for the monitor was 1024x768. If you want to try a square monitor, make sure it can handle a resolution of 1280 x 1024. Many 17" and above monitors will work.
