I think that those of us who play lever or celtic harp have thought this before - it just can't be done. Even I didn't try to make a lever harp arrangement of it for ages because I thought it would be too hard.For those who aren't familiar with lever harps, when there's an accidental, each affected string must be changed with a lever individually; this means that for an arpeggio with 1 or 2 notes in the chord that must be altered, anywhere from 3 to 8 levers might need to be changed across the harp to play the original arpeggios as written. With both hands busy playing, this wasn't very feasible.So, I wanted to create an adjustment that kept the spirit of the piece and the original harmonies, while reducing the number of levers and allowing enough time for what was left to be changed.The result is the arrangement in this video; although I know not all of it is /exactly/ like the original Prelude from the games, that's often the nature of lever harp arrangements. Changes must be made to accommodate the music and the instrument. So, what better time than when Tears of the Kingdom just came out?I actually started this arrangement right after TOTK came out, then remembered that I play Tarrey Town on stream all the time, so that one got finished first, and now this one is ready to share.As I discovered when I sat down to arrange this, Mipha's theme is quite chromatic. What I mean by that is, there's lots of sharps/flats/accidentals like every other bar, and so what THAT means is, there's lots of pedals. I did have to get a little creative in a few spots to not only get all the notes I wanted to play, but also change the pedals without hearing the strings change pitch as the pedals change.I think that worked out pretty well! But I do have an old harp, so the pedals are a little noisy. (I don't know how much it's changed in the Tears of the Kingdom soundtrack because I haven't gotten that far yet, lol.)For whatever reason, I basically didn't cover anything from Breath of the Wild when it came out, so I really wanted to cover something to celebrate Tears of the Kingdom coming out! I have plans for a couple other BOTW and TOTK covers coming up too, but they're taking me a little longer.Actually, I was already working on another arrangement when I remembered that this song is also from BOTW and that I play it all the time on stream so it would be really quick to prepare and record. I did a single take and did audio & video at the same time to save on editing time.Tarrey Town is one of those themes that just feels so homey and warm, and I love to play it. I'm so happy to finally present my first harp cover from Octopath Traveler II: Castti, the Apothecary!Castti's story had me curious right from the start, and as I played more I only loved her more ❤️ I wanted to try and reflect her story and her character through the music; so without really spoiling anything, I made it slower and sadder. It was kind of an accident, but it felt right so I ran with it. (Not that me making something slower and sadder is anything new, lol.)The second time through the melody I also wanted to reference the music that plays during some of Castti's flashback scenes, so hopefully that comes across.The soundtrack of Octopath Traveler II is just as beautiful as the first game, so you'll definitely be hearing more of it from me! I will be the first to admit that the gameplay isn't 100% perfect, (and a lot of the problems people had with it is that it's more JRPG with a little farming sim than the other way around), but I just had so much fun playing this game.And oh my gosh, the music. The music!! It's so beautiful that it's really a shame that the OST isn't available anywhere outside of Japan. What is Square Enix thinking? I just don't know. Maybe one day we'll be lucky and they'll put it on Spotify like so many other of their soundtracks. But for now I'll just cry into the way too delicious looking food art.This song, Vow Between Man and Stars, is the title theme of the game, but it's also a melody that is used absolutely EVERYWHERE in the game. It's fun hearing it come up in a new way while playing that totally changes the mood of it. The melody itself is really beautiful and it has some fun harmonies too that has me never getting tired of it. I am so excited to share this video, for many reasons.Firstly, it's been ages since I put up any Octopath and it was nice to relearn Flamesgrace in order to film the video.Second, I'm happy to be able to put up a nice wintery, snowy video just in time for the holiday season! :DThirdly, and probably the biggest reason, is that this is probably the nicest looking video I've made in a long time, especially one I made by myself (although I did have a little help from my husband Eric on one of the hand close-ups to make sure my hands stayed in frame). The new Sony camera I was able to get earlier this year, thanks in large part to community member Table 41, is able to film in 120 fps - which means it is capable of slo mo! Normally I wouldn't need this while filming myself playing (although maybe it's something to try in future? lol), but I had always wanted to film SOMETHING in the snow and knew it would be the perfect opportunity to test it out. Now, that ended up just being B roll for this video, because I would have to be insane to try and play my harp outdoors for an hour plus to film a video in -10 C weather, but the snow falling in slow motion is just so thrilling to see 😍Anyways, I'll let the rest of the video speak for itself! More Zelda music today :)A while ago, I was thinking about how even though Great Fairy's Fountain is such an iconic harp piece, the original is really hard, and would typically need a pedal harp to play, which means that there might be a lot of harpists out there wanting to play it, but not thinking they could.But the truth is it was actually pretty easy to make it into a lever harp version! This arrangement is what I would consider "early intermediate", so not like "first harp lesson" easy, but not terribly difficult, either. In this video I play it on my Dusty Strings Ravenna 26 with a full set of levers. You will need the levers to make this song work! I originally wrote this last summer for "Tales of Hyrule", a fairy-tale themed BOTW charity zine.Since all the submissions combined Breath of the Wild characters and fairy tales in the art and stories, I wanted to do something similar with my composition. What came to mind was Swan Lake (one of my favourite pieces of music of all time), combined with the Breath of the Wild Main Theme. Then I thought of Lover's Pond in Necluda - the heart shaped pond where you go to meet your true love :)The piece is pretty obviously divided into two sections. The first is largely modeled off the beginning of Swan Lake and channels that tragic fairy tale energy, with the fear of losing your one true love hanging in the air. The second section is modeled after one of the waltzes from Swan Lake, ending with a triumphant classic Zelda VI-VII-I harmony. Fill it out with some showy arpeggios and we're ready to go :PI hope you enjoy the result! See if you can pick out the influences from each material :)P.S.
