The committee assessed the intervention’s overall benefit-risk profile, including the potential public health impact and overwhelmingly voted against approval due to concerns with company conduct and clinical trial data.
The open public hearing of this meeting was extended in response to a citizen petition submitted April 28, 2024, which requested additional time to accommodate critical perspectives. The co-authors of the petition included Drs. Neşe Devenot and Brian Pace — who are board members of Psymposia — as well as Meaghan Buisson, an independent researcher and MAPS/Lykos clinical trial participant; Kayla Greenstein, PhD candidate at University of Sydney; and Dr. Alaina Jaster, of Virginia Commonwealth University.
Thanks to the extension of the open public hearing, over 30 public speakers were able to be heard in front of the advisory committee. The following public comments represent the public speakers who challenged Lykos Therapeutics’ new drug application. The full open public hearing can be viewed at the link in the description of this video.

Upon analyzing a sample of what the Church was selling as sacrament, the researchers concluded that their results “strongly indicate that the material distributed by the Church of Psilomethoxin does not contain the novel compound psilomethoxin (or 5-MeO-psilocybin) as claimed.” The paper concludes by stating that the Church’s “claims of producing a novel compound, psilomethoxin, by incorporating 5-MeO-DMT into the substrate of cultivated Psilocybe mushrooms are more akin to ‘fungi fiction’ than reality,” asserting, “our analysis revealed that the material distributed by the Church primarily contains known tryptamines, specifically psilocybin and psilocin, with a trace amount of baeocystin.”
In other words, the Church appears to be sending plain old cubensis mushrooms through the mail—at a markup of $50-$250/oz compared to the street prices reported by Erowid. The M-Scale and the Occult Roots of the JHU Psychedelic Research Program | Plus Three #56Psymposia2023-02-15 | In this episode, the Psymposia team speaks with writer Travis Kitchens about his recent piece "A Channel for Magic: Ralph Hood’s Mysticism Scale and the Occult Roots of the Johns Hopkins Psychedelic Research Program"

If you're not terminally online, here's a bit more context:
Public discourse concerning psychedelics and the emerging industry in psychedelic-assisted therapy has extended beyond the potential benefits of novel treatments for specific mental health disorders to claims that widespread psychedelic use may tilt social relations towards more egalitarian norms. Researchers and media outlets have pointed to several recent studies which present data asserting that classical psychedelics can reduce authoritarianism, increase liberal views, and deepen nature-relatedness.
Taken together, these studies are cited to promote a vision of drug-assisted social progress. Yet counter examples abound of psychedelic-experienced individuals expressing views explicitly opposed to egalitarianism and liberal politics. Moreover, acceptance of psychedelics by institutions and aspirational business and celebrity figures has only increased right-wing psychedelic interest in recent years.
This presentation highlights the numerous contemporary and historical cases where the use of psychedelics failed to reduce authoritarian tendencies in users, or even facilitated adoption of authoritarian views. We demonstrate that psychedelics can catalyze change in political or religious belief, but not in a consistent direction. Instead, we propose that many transformative experiences—including those induced by psychedelics—can challenge and radically shift a person’s worldview, and that extra-pharmacological factors influence the character of change in ideology or political belief.

Reacting to a 2021 podcast of Peterson's, we discuss the significance of Peterson's popularity among some prominent psychedelic researchers. As figures like Jordan Peterson and Ben Shapiro continue to advocate for harmful "conversion therapies" for minority sexual orientations and gender identities, we discuss the dangers of reactionary interest in psychedelic-assisted therapies, given that psychedelics are already associated with increased suggestibility and shifts in identity. Considering the fact that many scientists and CEOs in the psychedelic renaissance are lobbying right-wing donors and politicians, we highlight the risks inherent to reactionary forces developing frameworks for accessing psychedelics.

Why, then, is it so hard to get them to acknowledge the harms taking place in their communities? Why do institutions seem more concerned with preserving their reputations than addressing the numerous harmful dynamics that have persisted for years? If the psychedelic movement intends to heal trauma, it must begin at home.

It creates expectations which render people more vulnerable while filtering out those who are less susceptible to manipulation tactics and who notice the red flags early on.

Forty-three years after the UN Convention on Psychotropic Substances imposed global prohibition on psychedelic compounds, demarcating governmental efforts to end the first psychedelic revolution, a second major psychedelic awakening is underway. Set amidst the landscape of late capitalism, this resurgence is unfolding in the forms of renewed focus on sanctioned psychedelic research, the emergence of significant underground psychedelic research, and the rhizomorphic spread of global festival cultures.
The role of DMT in this “archaic revival” is impossible to ignore. From Nick Sands’ discovery that DMT freebase could be smoked in the early 60’s, to Terence McKenna’s discussions of the vaporized DMT experience sowing seeds in countless imaginations during the 80’s and 90’s, to the rise of internet forums and the DMT-Nexus in the 21st century, distributing information rendering the molecule accessible worldwide, DMT has manifested itself into popular consciousness at a truly astonishing rate.
This presentation explores manners of engaging with entheogenic experiences as well as their possible implications. How can participation in the divine mystery inform our actions in waking life? What is “radical psychedelic engagement” and how can it affect political action? What can the life of a psychonaut and DMT traveler look like?LIVESTREAM: 5k Q&A + No, Its Not OK To Vomit on Clients & Touch Their GenitalsPsymposia2021-02-26 | Psychedelic stonks aren’t the only thing on the rise. You can ask us anything. Like, our favorite pizza, or how we do our reporting, or what we think of season 5 of “Billions.”
We were going to spend the first hour of this stream on the 5k Q&A and the second hour discussing psychedelic stonks, but in the wake of the outcry around Martin Ball's admissions of vomiting on clients, touching their genitals, and engaging in other disturbing practices with people under the influence of 5-MeO-DMT, we've decided to discuss the continued unfolding of this story in addition to other current events.
We plan to cover stonks on a future stream, but given the disturbing justifications and apologetics around Dr. Ball's behaviors from various practitioners and community members, we felt it was important to prioritize this discussion.Excerpts from Dr. Martin Balls 2016 LAMPS Lecture (Reupload)Psymposia2021-02-24 | By popular demand: A recut of Dr. Martin Ball's statements at a 2016 Los Angeles Medicinal Plants Society (LAMPS) lecture.

In this video, Martin W. Ball, Ph.D. discusses his enthusiasm for vomiting on clients, touching his clients' genitals, and forcing his thumbs down their throats while "guiding" them under the influence of 5-MeO-DMT.
Ball hosts the "Entheogenic Evolution" podcast and is an online consultant for what he calls "Nondual Entheogenic Integration."
Ball edited, published, and authored the foreword to the 2020 edition of the "Manual for Psychedelic Guides" by Mark Haden—the former Executive Director of The Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) Canada.

This episode explores the rise of self-styled “thought leaders” within the psychedelic community, using Anand Giridharadas’ book “Winners Take All” as a jumping off point. Although people have been on the conference circuit for years, the recent explosion of capital investments means that there’s an unprecedented potential for money, celebrity, and status in the space.

In this episode, Lily Kay Ross joins us to discuss Olivia Goldhill’s story, “Psychedelic therapy has a sexual abuse problem.” Ross recently completed her doctorate studying social responses to sexual violence. She brings both her personal experience with sexual violence and poor community responses in psychedelic spaces and her academic insights to bear on the myriad of questions highlighted by Goldhill’s reporting.

On the one hand, psychedelics hold promise for personal healing and transformative individual change, and when psychedelics are eventually accepted by mainstream medicine, they will likely impact mental health outcomes for the better. But the broken systems highlighted by the coronavirus pandemic offer insight into why mental health has reached epidemic proportions in the first place.

In the midst of increasing global engagement with the fallout of the novel coronavirus, we examine some responses to the pandemic within the "psychedelic community.” Recognizing that the US has a longstanding history of privatizing profits while socializing costs, we also discuss the normalization of a "capitalist animism"—treating social phenomena like markets or financial capital as living entities—that fixates on "economic health" at the expense of public health. As this unprecedented situation continues to unfold, we explore some considerations for this sudden period of social isolation within a broader culture of social alienation.

Instead of talking about psychedelic clickbait, we’ll be discussing creeping fascism in psychedelia, including Psymposia’s Politics & Ecology Editor, Brian Pace’s story “Lucy in the Sky with Nazis: Psychedelic and the Far Right”; the “QAnon Shaman,” 8chan, MDMA-funder and Parler cofounder, Rebecca Mercer, and recent attempts to revive an organization started by Timothy Leary and Richard Alpert (Ram Dass) and transform it into a hub of pro-Trump and anti-Semitic conspirituality.
Psymposia offers leftist perspectives on drugs, politics, and culture.
Alan Piper is a maverick historian of ideas with a penchant for unique, deep dives into rich veins of psychedelia. Piper’s 2015 monograph, Strange Drugs Make for Strange Bedfellows: Ernst Jünger, Albert Hofmann, and the Politics of Psychedelics was foundational for the critique explored in Brian Pace’s controversial Lucy in the Sky with Nazis: Psychedelics and the Right Wing. In this interview, Pace interviews Piper about Hofmann tripping buddy and Wehrmacht Captain Jünger, LSD and ideology— clarifying concepts and dispelling myths.
