Vanagon T3 Westfalia 215 60R 16 spare tire in clamshell modified rand p hong 2026-06-30 | Full size spare tire to match existing wheels. Modified the clamshell. This probably the widest tire with this diameter that can fit. A wider tire must be a smaller diameter. Parts used: 5/16 X 2 X 5" square u-bolt, 5/16 nylock nuts, extra plates cut from a 6" brace. Holes spacing happened to be just right! Original plates are too loose to fully support the open ends of u-bolt. M12 X 1.5 X 120mm bolt and a spacer 3-5/8" tube. NB: LENGTHS CAN VARY! Method: Put gear in reverse! Place tire in clamshell, push up between crossmember and shift box. Use ratchet strap to help. Raise clamshell and put jack below, jack up until tire contacts shift rod, then lower. Loosen strap and move tire forward. Ensure it fits behind the front crossmember. Check clearances of shift rod, steering shaft, hoses etc. Adjust jack as necessary. Tire should be able to slide around slightly. Screw in the M12 bolt. Start engine and ensure you can shift into reverse. DO NOT ALLOW THE VAN TO MOVE! Adjust the M12 bolt if necessary and measure the exposed length, this will be the length of the spacer tube. Cut tube, insert the M12 bolt and tighten. Remove the jack and re-test reverse gear selection. WARNING: VIDEO FOR ENTERTAINMENT PURPOSES. ATTEMPT AT YOUR OWN RISK! WARNING: THE CLAMSHELL IS NOT FLAT AND CAN SCRATCH THE WHEEL. Use a piece of cardboard or plastic to cushion the wheel. Future mods. Extend the latch. Cut out the centre of the clamshell and reverse it. Make a clamp to hold wheel to the clamshell. Many thanks to the people on Samba, facebook and other youtubers for inspiration.

Repairs to a pop top tent, VW Westfalia rand p hong 2025-08-07 | Is it possible to clean and repair an old tent? I decided to find out. Replaced the old tent with a new acrylic and was going to dump the old tent. However, I decided to see if it could be cleaned and repaired. Used CLR mold & mildew stain remover. Worked well except for some small stubborn spots. Then I tried ZEP mold stain and mildew stain remover. not much difference and unfortunately left the canvas with blotches. Then I applied iron on patches and also stitched them down to prevent peeling at the edges. Also zig zag stitched over the tears. If I knew I would get such good results I probably would have not bought a new tent. 😅
Westfalia pop top assist struts from GoWesty rand p hong 2025-07-25 | Followed the GoWesty installation video. Used a self centering hinge bit on the holes. I accidentally pried one of the retaining clips completely off the end of a strut, so I used an expanding circlip pliers to replace it.

Replacing a Westfalia pop top tent by myself. rand p hong 2025-07-17 | It's possible to remove the pop top and replace the tent mostly alone. I did have some help turning it over. Attempt at your own risk! Acrylic tent from Dr Bjorn. I am in the BC wet climate and I thought acrylic would be better. Not sure who was the manufacturer, but it was an extremely tight fit at the bottom. The circumference/perimeter ought to be 2 or 3 inches larger. Cannot stretch it enough so the back is really taut when it's up. Started bottom installation from the front. Will make some adjustments later to relieve the tautness. First time I have attempted this, so in retrospect I would have compared the size of the bottom of the tent vs the top of the van as my first step. This would have given me an opportunity to return the tent without any screw holes! So I am stuck with it and have to make adjustments. I took the top off completely as I wanted to remove the mold

Hoover Central vacuum Hush Series model S5627. Checking the Motor brushes. rand p hong 2024-10-16 | Vacuum is about 30 years, works extremely well. Motor brushes changed 10 years ago after it quit. Today I check the brushes. Also had a look at the old brushes and realized that one brush was not properly installed at the factory. Metal part had touched the commutator, melted and stopped the carbon from sticking out. Fixed by filing away the excess metal. Now I have 2 sets of spare brushes!
