Have you wondered how computers function under layers of abstraction? Are you curious about learning about assembly languages? Would you like to try fun challenges, while getting to know a permacomputing platform? Join us in learning about Uxn!
Uxn is a portable 8-bit virtual computer inspired by forth-machines, capable of running simple tools and games, and programmable in its own unique assembly language called Uxntal.
Uxn is at the core of Varvara computer, a platform for running small audio/visual applications. Varvara has been ported already to several years old and modern computing platforms, like the Gameboy Advance, Nintendo DS, the Playdate, and more.
In this workshop we'll introduce the basic concepts to start programming this computer: its architecture, the programming paradigms of Uxntal, and some low-level aspects that will allow us to create a simple drawing tool!
Pre-requisites: This workshop is best for those with some previous programming experience. However, no previous experience with assembly or low-level computing is needed.
We will use the learn-uxn website by metasyn, that requires a web browser with javascript enabled: metasyn.github.io/learn-uxn
Bio:
sejo (they/them) explores permacomputing and computing at a human scale with the compudanzas project . They wrote the Uxn tutorial, a beginner's guide for programming the varvara computer and a slow-paced companion to the official documentation .

Presenting a new edition of a book for anyone who wants to program computers in order to explore and create. Grammy-award winning rapper Wasalu Jaco (pka Lupe Fiasco) calls it “an optimal place to begin your journey into coding. Clear, concise, and of consequence.”
Ready for use by individuals and informal groups, this book from the MIT Press is both available in print as a hardback, lie-flat publication (place it alongside your computer for the best experience!) and freely downloadable in an open access digital format.
In conversation with Berlin-based scholar Nikita Braguinski, author Nick Montfort will discuss how programmers can create new kinds of artworks and to probe data for new ideas, as well as how computing exists in a cultural context. He will cover some less typical approaches in the book — learning across media types and programming languages. Nick and Nikita will also discuss the relationship between “arts” (generative) and “humanities” (analytical) types of programming.

4.11.2021 - Doom-Modding Workshop
Bring your love of old school Doom or come to see just why this game platform is still so beloved.
When DOOM was created and released in 1993 its creators were strong proponents of copyleft and free remix culture. A year later the first shareware level editing and game modding software was released. The beauty of Doom is its continued accessibility, the speed of the game and its thriving community of sharing knowledge online. It is still fast and fun, with instant multi-player potential, and we still love to play. With recent improvements through ZDoom, higher resolution images allow improved possibilities for creative storytelling. We want to encourage other artists to make worlds in it too.
No previous experience necessary! All are welcome.
Led by artists Eben Kling (@ebenkling) and Aude Jomini (@audehelene). Using our own experimental game, Doom-Haven (at http://www.feedfeednhv.com/digital/index.html) we will go through the process of making a full conversion mod for Doom, using free tools Slade and DoomBuilder, including scripting in Decorate and ACS. We will post a quick-start guide with downloadable resources ahead, go over basic tips and map making tricks, share our custom sprites and textures as asset packs, and explain multi-player server setup. We will point you to the Doom community resources which helped us most along the way.
Help keep Babycastles thriving during COVID-19! Participants are encouraged to send a $5 - $15 sliding scale donation. Venmo: @babycastles or make a one-time contribution or sign up for a membership at withfriends.co/babycastles
About us:
We are not experienced coders or software engineers: we are painters and architectural designers. We have been making work with Doom during COVID to express our ideas about digital identity, void-like architecture and public space more directly. Doom became our site of collaboration for 2020, a complicated love letter to our city. Our game, a conversion mod called Doom-Haven, is set in Long Wharf and downtown New Haven. Using Doom as a medium has given us a way to travel back in time while thinking through current issues. Endless Ports of Doom in multitude testify to the game’s enduring wide reach, as well as its code’s resiliency and continued accessibility. The code and textures live in “.wad” files, named for “where is all the data?” Wads can be taken apart in their entirety, thus unlocking both the images and code lumps that make up the game. The back-end builder for maps allows free exploration and fast experimentation using the engine, allowing for digital travel into a 27-year repository of other mods. The original Doom was never a black box. The full code and the development implements were both released with the original game. Various enthusiasts have taken up the mantle of upkeep and have sustained the life of this game for the past 27 years, extending the functionality and resolution of its building tools. It’s an awesome world. -- Watch live at twitch.tv/babycastles

Workshop:
Video games are so cool! But how do you actually make a videogame? Where do you even start? The answer is right here! Using PICO-8, you will make a pixel art game like Undertale in less than an hour, that you can share with your friends and family and enemies and exes and former bosses that you've developed strangely paternal relationships with.
I mean it'll be a lot lot smaller than Undertale. But it'll be a real damn videogame!
Pico-8 is a fantasy console and game engine created by Lexaloffle Games that emules the hardware limitations of the video game consoles from the 1980s. The goal is to spur one's creativity and ingenuity with constructive constraints to produce games, and to avoid being overwhelmed with the many possibilities of modern tools and machines. Pico-8 includes a sprite editor, code editor, music maker, map maker and track creator. PICO-8 makes videogame development fun and easy. We'll show you how.
This workshop is meant for people who want to make a game and and have never made one before. But all are welcome!
Instructor: Fran Rojo

Join Daniel Lichtman in this workshop that introduces a range of “DIY” techniques in Unity to quickly make exciting, rich and layered 3D environments, no coding or specialized game-dev skills required. Lichtman will go through simple techniques for adding hand-drawn and flat, photo-based objects to your scene. He’ll demonstrate how to scan drawings and turn them into transparencies that, with a little (really only a little!) creativity, can fill your 3D space with fun, organic texture. He will also demonstrate how to take 360-degree photos with any phone, and use these as compelling, if often strange and disorienting skyboxes. Finally, he’ll show you how to fiddle with freely-available 3D models to turn them into mysterious, alluring objects to navigate in your scene.

In this workshop we are going to talk about EMAIL! Yes, email! Not to complain about email (necessarily), but the good parts about email like the cool stuff that we can do with it: maintain a git repo, display html, run your own email server, use a CLI inbox, and make art. Good ol email only relies on a protocol from the 70s and it's not going anywhere. For many of us it is the most used form of digital communication that doesn't necessarily need to rely on big tech companies. We will converse about the future of email, our personal pasts of email, we can vent about email etiquette we can even read email's natal chart if that's where the conversation leads us.
Then in the second part of the workshop we will explore with toy email addresses that everyone will get an alternate email universe, where the emails we send are altered by a mischievous email server.
