MONROE TOWNSHIP -- Emergency crews have left a natural gas dehydration station just over the Luzerne County line in Monroe Township, Wyoming, after being dispatched because of a gas release. mercaptan dallas pa school

A Luzerne County 911 supervisor said company officials are on site and fire crews have been released from the scene.

A supervisor at Luzerne County 911 said a gas release has caused a sound like a jet engine and reports on the police scanner said gas was releasing into the air.

The station, off Old Highway Road, which runs parallel to Route 309 just over the Dallas Township line, is owned by PVR Partners. Emergency crews including Kunkle Fire Department were on scene and had asked dispatchers to contact PVR to get them on site.

Kunkle Fire Chief Jack Dodson said it appears a release valve on the machine blew off. The station was shut down to relieve pressure. The shut down is only temporary, the chief noted.

Earlier this year, PVR Partners, based in Radnor, purchased some of Chief Gathering LLC's Marcellus Shale assets. Included in the purchase was the pipeline system Chief Gathering was constructing to bring natural gas from wells in northern Wyoming County to the Transco interstate pipeline in Dallas Township. The dehydration station in Monroe Township is part of this particular pipeline system. The Dimock officials postponed signing a mutual aid agreement offered Friday by Binghamton Mayor Matthew T. Ryan, who wants to deliver water to 11 families at odds with Cabot Oil and Gas Corp., the company the state deemed responsible for contaminating township wells with methane. Cabot says it is not responsible for the contamination, and federal regulators said Friday that a preliminary review of past water tests does not indicate that the well water presents an immediate health threat. The families lawyer asked Friday for a retraction of that statement, citing water tests that show elevated metals and the presence of chemicals for which there are no drinking water standards. Supervisor Paul Jennings said Sunday the board would not sign the mutual aid agreement or any legal document without consulting its solicitor, who was not available to review the document on Friday. At one point 800 gallons of fluid per minute were flowing out. DEP says workers were able to contain the fracking fluid in a nearby retention pond and only a little bit got on the road. Hydraulic fracturing or fracking is the process of using liquid to break up underground shale to extract natural gas. DEP tested the air and water and found nothing wrong but the testing will continue just to make sure. We actually did radiation test, of fracking fluid, of any methane into the air, said DEP spokesperson Coleen Connolly. Inspectors were in the township hamlet of Franklin Forks on Wednesday to take a second round of samples from water wells. DEP officials originally indicated to residents in January that the likely source of the gas was a natural methane seep documented for over a century in nearby Salt Springs State Park. But the chemical markers of the Salt Springs methane have been well characterized by scientists and the department is just now in the process of determining the signature of the gas found in the water wells to compare to the seep. Analyzing the stable carbon isotopes - a form of chemical fingerprinting of the gas - could prove fruitful in this case because Salt Springs is so well documented, DEP spokeswoman Colleen Connolly said. The department also is considering the potential impact of nearby Marcellus Shale drilling on the water supplies. Everything is still part of the investigation, she said. Were not ruling anything out. DEP cited WPX Energy for defective casing or cement in two of the natural gas wells closest to Franklin Forks last year. The nested strings of steel casing and cement are meant to protect aquifers from gas and other fluids in the wells, but flaws in the barriers have caused methane to migrate into water supplies throughout the region, most notably in Bradford County and Dimock Twp. 15 miles south. DEP inspectors also found gas bubbling from between the casing strings on three more WPX wells on the same two well pads - the DePue and Hollenbeck - although those wells were not cited for violations.
