Daiku no Gen-San, or Hammerin' Harry, is a great series of side scrollers about a carpenter armed with nothing but a wooden hammer.
As simple as it may sound, the games from this series are always well made and offer a nice challenge.

Gen-San the Carpenter: Ghost Building Company is one of the best of the series but if you can, play any of them as they are all as nice as this one.
