Setup a Two Car Garage Work Shop - What I did this summer Makercise 2018-09-11 | Setup these important infrastructure items for a two-car garage workshop. Clapper Assembly for Gingery Shaper Makercise 2018-05-29 | I have completed the clapper assembly for the Gingery shaper as I follow book 3 in the series. The clapper box is where the clapper block mounts. The clapper block is where the tool post mounts. This assembly is right up there with the bull wheel and yoke relative to interesting features of the shaper. The clapper box has a small angle adjustment to give the cutting tool clearance when cutting vertically along an angled plane relative to the work table. Finally, the clapper assembly mounts on the downfeed. Down Feed for Gingery Shaper - The Axis for Dovetail Cutting Makercise 2018-02-27 | I have completed the downfeed for the Gingery shaper as I follow book 3 in the series. The downfeed is where the clapper box mounts. It provides the degree of freedom for moving the cutting tool along an angled plane relative to the work table. By varying the rotating head, a dovetail of 60 degrees can be cut. The downfeed crank is advanced between strokes and the cutter takes more material off the work piece.I gloss over the details associated with mounting the downfeed to the downfeed slide ways. Center Jig - Superior Alignment of Rod Stock for Lathe Work Makercise 2018-02-20 | I made a center jig to help align my center drill bit relative to rod stock's outer diameter. The jig slips over the end of rod stock to guide the drill. This is especially important for me since my drill press and its work table tend to flex. Even if I were to mark the center correctly, even if I center punch the center correctly--both of which are suspect--the table, vise, and rod bend away from the drill resulting in an off-center center. The jig seems to help. The draw back to this type of jig is that I need to make one for every size of stock that I use. This doesn't seem insurmountable given the limited number of rod stock sizes I currently stock. A nice solution for various diameter stock is a bell punch. This would get the center punched dead on, but again my problem is primarily that the drill press flexes. Show Stopper? Home Makercise Hicup - Termites!!! Makercise 2018-01-09 | Oh no! Major road bump. I don't know what to do. This changes everything. Not sure what I will do. I encountered copious amounts of termite damage. The biggest issue is that the damage doesn't seem limited to the sills. It seems to extend up into the wall studs. I haven't made a decision yet about what to do. The project is on hold for now. Considering Plan B, C, and ZZ. Be sure to weigh in. What do you think?Thanks for following the project this far. DIY Charcoal Retort - Convert Brush into Biochar Makercise 2017-12-12 | Watch me make a charcoal retort. Just exercising my inner maker here. Sounds like using charcoal can be a really helpful amendment for soil to help it retain nutrients. Bull Wheel Sprocket Chain Drive for Metal Shaper Makercise 2017-09-22 | I fabricate the bull wheel, bearing support, and crankshaft for my Gingery shaper. I cast the bearing support and then bored it for the crank shaft bearings. Achieving the press fit tolerance was very rewarding. Big thanks to Cadre Patron, Bob Teeter, since he is the one who recommended I add a dial. Having it makes boring and turning less guesswork and more repeatable.The sprocket is an off the shelf 40 tooth sprocket. I bored it out to fit the larger diameter of the crankshaft. SV Seeker Road Trip and Shop Update Makercise 2017-07-27 | It has been a crazy month. I went to work on SV Seeker and had a blast. I stopped in to see the original Cressel Anderson. Finally, I am planning on moving this month. I spend a good three weeks on house work to sell our property, to buy new property, and to start work on the new place. More to come in the next few weeks on that front.It is a mad dash to get as much progress made on the shaper as I can before clearing out the shop. Building a shop on the new property will be job 1. Bronze: Fabricate Crucible Tongs and Shank and Alloy at Home Makercise 2017-06-21 | Fabrication of crucible tong and shanks for alloying Bronze alloy C932 while racing the kiln. I use 1/8"x3/4" hot rolled steel for the tongs and shank. For the shank handle I used some 1/2" square tube 16ga. thickness. I used these homemade tools to alloy my own (verified) C932 bronze. Fortunately, it isn't too difficult to whip these up with some hot rolled bar. Also fortunately, a #8 just barely squeezes into my portable propane foundry.One of the interesting items I ran into in this project was the conservation voltage reduction (CVR) implemented by Georgia Power on the power line feeding my house. The first time I poured copper ingots for alloying, it was later in the day ~8:30pm. I estimate the voltage to be 120V which results in the kiln elements dissipating 2.37kW of power. That was sufficient to get the kiln to a temperature of 2070F for pouring. The second time I poured copper ingots, it was in the early afternoon. Because early afternoon is a peak power demand time, the voltage at my house was reduced to 116V. This reduced the power dissipated in my kiln by 7% which may not seem like a lot, but I was already pushing the kiln to its limit. It flat-lined at 1960F, so I broke out the portable propane foundry to bump it over the melting point. MAN! It performed like a champ!It only takes about a half hour to get up to copper melting temperature. It is slick, small, and portable. I love it. The kiln still has its place though especially where precision is concerned.I combined the tin, zinc, and lead into an ingot before trying to alloy. This is important because zinc vaporizes at a temperature below the melting point of copper. The addition of a cold ingot of Sn/Pb/Zn drops the temp of the copper enough to keep the zinc from vaporizing too much. It also drops the melting point of the molten bronze alloy enough to keep the zinc from vaporizing. I got this technique from the article: scientificamerican.com/article/to-make-brass-and-alloysA local scrap yard used this tool to analyze my ingot. B)thermofisher.com/order/catalog/product/XL3TGOLDDPLUSIn 1.3 seconds, I could tell I had successfully alloyed C932 bronze. The results were 83.28% Cu, 7.57% Sn, 6.42% Pb, 2.61% Zn. Pretty close to the 83%, 7%, 7%, 3% for which I was shooting. SUPER FUN! I plan to use this ingot to make replacement bearings for the lathe so I don't have to keep eating the shipping cost for special bearings. Facing the Shaper Ram = Exceeding the Lathe Capacity - Gingery Shaper Part 4 Makercise 2017-05-31 | I cleaned up the lost foam casting to mate the ram cap and ram for my Gingery Shaper. During this step of the project, I turned an arbor and used it to face the ram using my lathe. As you know, the ram facing is an operation that pushes the Gingery lathe's capacity to its limit. DANGEROUS metal recycling? Scrapping to get the right alloy for sand casting Makercise 2017-04-06 | Try this for killer efficiency. Stop letting your scrapping process rob your foundry efficiency. I get this question a lot: what metal do you use for sand casting? I use aluminum, but not just any aluminum and certainly not beverage cans. I like to find parts that have been cast in sand originally. This means the alloy is a good one for sand casting such as A356. I will also use die cast part from alloys such as A383. Since I have run out of metal to cast parts for the Gingery Shaper I am building, I figured it would be a good opportunity to answer the question about the source of my metal. I use a circular saw to break down some components, which seems exceptionally dangerous to me. Be sure to understand how to do this safely before trying. Casting the Column Front and Column Assembly - Gingery Shaper Part 2 Makercise 2017-03-30 | As you know I started building a Gingery Shaper recently. In this part of the series, I use the lost foam casting method to create the column front. Then I add the vertical ways and assemble the column front. I now have the initial column assembly completed. Note that only two fasteners are used because I need to adjust the front column so the vertical ways are aligned with the ram slide. In the shop, I have now spent 32 hours minimally and 37 hours with optional items. To date, I have used $20 worth of materials and almost $1 of fuel. Mobile Lathe Cart with Concrete Top for Added Stability Makercise 2017-03-01 | This video shows construction of a mobile lathe cart for my Gingery lathe. The concrete top really adds stability due to its mass. The top weighs in at about 240lbs. I am really please with how the cart turned out.
