Kava growers in Hawaiʻi are hoping for a total crackdown on a highly addictive plant extract with effects similar to opioids.
A cocktail of kava and kratom, sometimes called “gas station heroin,” or “black komodo,” has been popping up in Hawaiʻi convenience stores.
The dangers might not be obvious to the average person, and kids can get their hands on it. Kava (or ʻawa) growers fear guilt by association.
Several states and countries have banned kratom, but the current bill proposed in Hawaiʻi doesn’t go that far.
