We installed a brand new G2Station MeshCore repeater on top of Short Mountain, the highest point in Middle Tennessee, and the results speak for themselves. In this video we walk through the full install of a mountain top MeshCore repeater built to dramatically expand mesh network coverage across Middle Tennessee and push toward linking up with the East Tennessee mesh community.
The total cost of this build, including the antenna, came in at $2500. That covers the G2Station MeshCore hardware, the antenna system, mounting, and everything needed to get a permanent off grid mesh repeater on the air. As soon as the repeater came online we saw immediate and significant coverage improvements across the region, with nodes hitting the repeater from much farther out than before.
If you are new to MeshCore, it is a decentralized off grid mesh communication network running on LoRa hardware that allows users to send messages without cell service, internet, or any centralized infrastructure. Mountain top repeaters like this one act as backbone nodes that extend the usable range of the entire network for every user in the area.
Short Mountain sits at the highest elevation in Middle Tennessee, which makes it the ideal location for a repeater of this scale. The elevation, line of sight, and surrounding terrain give the G2Station hardware a massive footprint and set the foundation for a long term goal of connecting the Middle Tennessee mesh region with the East Tennessee mesh region.
