Prime Minister Mark Carney has launched a competition to pick a Canadian company to renovate the prime minister’s official residence.
It’s been closed since 2015 because of its poor state.
The winning company will handle the design of the renovation and the execution. Carney declined to get into specifics about the budget, saying the cost will hinge on the ideas brought forward.
Carney said Friday that it’s time to act to save the residence. He said it was left to languish, allowing damage to spread and repair costs to increase.
First built in 1868, the 35-room residence became the home for prime ministers in 1951 and served in that role through to 2015.
Justin Trudeau was unable to move his family in because of the state of the property.
Instead, Trudeau and his family settled in Rideau Cottage on the grounds of nearby Rideau Hall where governors-general live and work. Carney also lives in that cottage.
