Mahalo for joining this behind-the-reporting conversation with Managing Editor Jessica Terrell and reporter Caitlin Thompson on Civil Beat’s latest homelessness project, where we set out to capture a fuller picture of homelessness on Oʻahu.
Civil Beat has covered O‘ahu’s Point-in-Time count for more than a decade, and while the homeless census is a way of gauging the state’s progress — or lack thereof — in addressing homelessness, it only provides a limited snapshot of the crisis.
This year, Civil Beat decided to do something different and asked our O‘ahu-based reporting staff to spend the day chronicling the impact of homelessness on our community — from people living on the streets to business owners, residents and the workers charged with lifting people out of homelessness. What they found reveals a different picture of a crisis that impacts everyone in our state.
