And relax... no magpies, no woodpeckers, we still have five chicks in the nest box at the end of the day. Oh, and by the way this little box from a tiny corner of Loughborough crossed the 1000 subscriber mark today. Thank you lots and lots for joining the adventure and journey with our pair of Blue Tits. It's genuinely amazing that it's come this far!
Good grief, a few of these chicks are getting big. There's no way of telling if it's the same chicks in the same position that are getting bigger or if they keep swapping around. It's now very noticeable that when they jump up upon the entrance of one of the parents that the chicks are starting to protect their position by spreading their wings. The parents seem to have adopted the policy of whichever mouth is tallest gets fed first. Survival of the fittest in action.
Wings now have patterned feathers, eyes are opening albeit not first thing in the morning. The nest cup or bowl is being gradually expanded by our female. This is to keep the chicks contained. If you compare the bowl to a week ago it's much taller and wider. Our female can barely keep herself afloat across the bowl!
