Anker SOLIX X1 home battery review after 3–4 months of real-world use, including winter solar, electricity bills and blackout backup. My power bill went from $242 in February to $72.90 in June — but the biggest saving wasn't where I expected it.

I installed a 20 kWh Anker SOLIX X1 home battery system using four battery modules, connected to my existing rooftop solar and the Anker SOLIX Power Dock Pro.

Rather than reviewing it from a specification sheet, this is what the system has actually been like to live with.

My solar array isn't ideally positioned. Some panels face more east and some more west, and winter production can fall dramatically. That makes this a useful real-world test of whether a home battery can still make sense when solar production isn't perfect.

I look at how the battery stores lower levels of solar production during the day and then supplies the higher loads around the house when they're needed. I also explain why my biggest electricity saving has actually been during the day rather than overnight.

We have also had three grid failures since the battery was installed, including one lasting around eight hours. The battery carried the house through those outages without me needing to connect the generator.

The system is currently configured with a 10% backup reserve, keeping some battery capacity available if the grid fails overnight.

I also look at whether 20 kWh has been the right battery size. During April and May the battery could reach full charge and carry the house through a complete 24-hour period. In winter, lower solar production means it may only reach around 40% on a good day, but that can still cover the important evening cooking and peak-demand period.

One unexpected benefit came from the Anker SOLIX monitoring app. It helped identify a faulty bore pump that was running continuously and consuming a large amount of electricity — potentially saving both electricity costs and a failed pump.

For farmers, rural landholders and homeowners considering solar battery storage, this video covers the practical questions: does a home battery reduce electricity bills, how does battery backup work during a blackout, what size home battery do you need, how useful is solar storage during winter, can a battery replace a generator, and what can energy monitoring tell you about power use around a property?
