The 2026 Toyota RAV4 GR Sport is the most aggressive-looking version of the world's best-selling SUV, with a lowered, retuned chassis, a menacing mesh grille with a red GR badge, a blacked-out roof and 19-inch black alloys. In this footage-first walkaround we go over every inch of it, inside and out, and then answer the one question the GR badge really raises: does the sportiest RAV4 actually go any harder than a normal one?
Under the skin is Toyota's 2.5-litre self-charging full hybrid with electric all-wheel drive, making 222 PS and getting to 100 km/h in about 8.1 seconds. Here is the honest part: that is exactly the same power and the same 0-100 time as an ordinary RAV4 hybrid. The GR Sport genuinely gets a lower ride height, firmer dampers, a front performance damper and quicker steering, so it feels sharper and sits flatter, but it is not faster. Inside, you get proper GR Sport sports seats with red stitching, a dark cabin and a Sport drive mode, wrapped around the same clever, roomy family packaging that made the RAV4 famous.
The honest negative: you are paying a premium for a look and a chassis, not for speed, and the RAV4 seats only five. A Nissan X-Trail e-Power is actually quicker to 100 km/h and offers seven seats, while a Honda CR-V matches the boot with a plusher, quieter cabin.
SPECS AT A GLANCE
- Engine: 2.5-litre petrol, self-charging full hybrid (HSD)
- Power: 222 PS (163 kW) system output, electric AWD (AWD-i)
- 0-100 km/h: about 8.1 seconds
- Economy (WLTP): about 5.8 l/100 km · CO2 132 g/km
- Boot: about 580 litres (seats up) · 5 seats
- Wheels: 19-inch black alloys
- Price (GR Sport, Switzerland showroom): CHF 58,990
THE ONE TO BUY: the GR Sport itself, if you want the sharpest-looking, best-handling RAV4 and can accept normal-hybrid pace.
SKIP IT IF: you expected real GR performance, or you need seven seats, in which case a Nissan X-Trail e-Power makes more sense.
Filmed at a European showroom, so the car on screen wears European-market trim. Pricing is the Swiss showroom figure; this self-charging hybrid GR Sport trim is not sold in the United States.
