oyota’s long heritage in hybrid technology has taken a huge leap forward with the launch of the new LandCruiser 300 performance hybrid powertrain now available in flagship Sahara ZX and GR Sport grades.
With maximum combined outputs of 341kW of power and 790Nm of torque from its twin-turbo V6 petrol hybrid system, the LandCruiser performance hybrid powertrain offers 114kW more power and 90Nm more torque than the 3.3-litre V6 turbo-diesel engine, making it the most powerful LandCruiser ever.
Unlike the series parallel efficiency hybrid systems in other Toyota models, the performance system is a parallel hybrid that places an electric motor between the petrol engine and traditional 10-speed automatic transmission.
Maximum outputs for the petrol engine are 305kW of power and 650Nm of torque with the electric motor producing 36kW of power and 250Nm of torque.
Depending on conditions and driver input, the two power sources operate seamlessly in tandem or individually to provide powerful, responsive and linear acceleration and the strong torque needed when towing, under heavy load or tackling tough terrain.
Towing capacity for the two models is the same as the diesel LandCruiser range at 3500kg1 but the effort demanded of the powertrain in the performance hybrid is noticeably reduced.
Completing the performance hybrid system is an air-cooled 6.5Ah, 288V nickel metal hydride (NiMH) battery that is installed in a waterproof tray beneath the rear luggage space, ensuring minimal impact on the interior packaging.
To make the most of the performance hybrid system, the two new flagship LandCruisers also share the same immensely capable full-time four-wheel drive system with a dual-range transfer case and up to five-mode multi-terrain select system and adaptive variable suspension.
Providing excellent on-road high speed stability and control, the Sahara ZX features a Torsen®3 limited slip differential on the rear axle, while the off-road hero GR Sport gains front and rear locking differentials and electronically-controlled e-KDSS suspension.
