A note on the car you are looking at: we filmed this one in a European showroom with twelve miles on the clock, so the trim name and badging on screen are European. The mechanical story is the one America buys. A 2.0-liter four works with three electric motors for 196 net combined horsepower, and a separate electric motor drives the rear axle with no driveshaft and no transfer case, engaging only when the front wheels start to slip. Toyota calls it Electronic On-Demand all-wheel drive, and it comes with Snow and Trail modes. EPA rates every hybrid grade at 46 city, 39 highway, 42 combined.
One catch, and it is the important one: that rear motor lives under the load floor, so cargo space behind the back seats is 21.5 cubic feet, against 24.0 in the front-drive gas car. A Honda HR-V holds 24.4 cubic feet whichever drivetrain you pick. That is about a carry-on bag of difference, on a car whose rear seat is already the tightest thing about it at 32.0 inches of legroom.
