Allison and I had the great pleasure of viewing the 2026 Total Solar Eclipse from a vineyard near Peñafiel, Spain, as part of a UCLA Alumni group trip. Eclipse totality lasted 1 min 35 sec late in the day in Peñafiel. We viewed the eclipse from atop the flat roof of the vineyard’s main building, which was covered with rocks.
This is the fifth total solar eclipse that we've viewed and each one is a bit different. This viewing had a few unique features: 1) Eclipse totality occurred just before sunset so the sun was a bit more reddish in color, 2) we were able to witness the partially eclipsed sun setting on the horizon, 3) recent wildfires in the area created an even redder and darker sunset, so much so that a solar filter was not required to record video of the setting sun, and 4) a very significant solar prominence was visible during totality in the left hemisphere of the eclipsed sun.
