In this CAMLS Spotlight, we sit down with Zahid Hasan, an Undergraduate Research Student in the STAR Lab at USF Health CAMLS, to discuss his innovative research presented at the 2026 OneUSF Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium.
Zahid's project explores how extended reality (XR) can be brought to everyday smartphones, making immersive training more accessible and affordable. His research focuses on enhancing smartphones with stereoscopic vision and XR capabilities, creating a portable platform that delivers realistic depth perception, hand tracking, and interactive virtual experiences without relying on expensive, specialized hardware.
During the interview, Zahid discusses the engineering behind the system, the challenges of adapting smartphone technology for immersive XR, and how this approach could expand access to healthcare simulation, medical education, and procedural training around the world.
