This performance is part of the 2026 Berlinale where a neuro-concert is overlaid by electronic sound and a spatial light installation. These elements are modulated in real-time by the violist’s neural activity (measured via fNIRS with a NIRx NSP2 32x32 setup). A live machine learning pipeline uses the data stream to estimate the internal state of the performing violist on the arousal and valence axes. This creates a responsive soundscape that reacts directly to the film’s visual and emotional stimuli as mediated by the performer. The result is a multisensory journey that audibly and visibly projects the friction between conscious performance and unconscious modulation into the performance space, holding a mirror to the loop between cinema, music, and collective emotions. With fNIRS we provide the public with a sixth sense, a window on the secret life of the mind that is the topic of Gemenisse Eine Seele.
World premiere of the 4K digital restoration of G.W. Pabst’s psychoanalytical silent film Secrets of a Soul (1926). Conceived as an interdisciplinary "Cine Lab Concert" , the screening features a new hybrid composition by Yongbom Lee , performed live by a solo viola and ensemble.
