Mathematician Yu Deng of the University of Chicago has won the 2026 Fields Medal.

Through his work on partial differential equations, Deng derived the Boltzmann equation from “billiard ball” dynamics for rarefied gases as well as the wave-kinetic equations from nonlinear dispersive systems.

Deng is also a researcher with the Simons Collaboration on Wave Turbulence and a recipient of our travel support for mathematicians.
