For a while out there - for about 30sec - Sir Lewis Hamilton's Ferrari sat in the coveted P1 qualifying slot in Hungary. Then reality set in: Lewis had been pipped at flagfall by McLaren-Mercedes' Lando Norris. The margin: 0.012sec. Ferrari had neglected to tell Lewis about this because they were preoccupied by another drama - to wit, not telling Lewis to move over for Lando's team-mate, Oscar Piastri, who was on his last push lap in the closing seconds of qualifying. From that virtual P1, then, Lewis dropped quickly to P5, having incurred yet another penalty in what for him has already become a penalty-blighted year. Charles Leclerc thus lines up on the front row alongside Norris, ahead of Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli, Piastri and then Lewis. It was a bad day for Red Bull, with their power unit hopelessly out of sync with the demands of the circuit and their grip and handling suffering accordingly. Note: after this video was posted came the news that Kimi Antonelli has also received a three-place grid penalty for not slowing sufficiently under the Max Verstappen yellows. Learning from what happened in Austria, when he slowed dramatically while George only lifted his right foot, Kimi in Hungary did as George did in Austria. The Hungargian GP stewards, though, in yet another bout of massive inconsistency, on this occasion deemed the lift not to be enough - despite the precedent set in Austria (when Max also triggered the drama!) and despite the incident today being a harmless spin rather than a shunt into a barrier. Oscar Piastri and Max Verstappen thus occupy row two, ahead of Lewis Hamilton and George Russell (row three) and Antonelli and Isack Hadjar, now on row four.
