Flagstaff County recently welcomed 25 nursing and medical students from Red Deer Polytechnic for the Let’s Go Rural Post-Secondary Experience! This immersive three-day event, hosted in partnership with Flagstaff County, the Rural Health Professions Action Plan (RhPAP), and the Flagstaff Healthcare Attraction & Retention (FlHAR) Committee, showcased the incredible career and lifestyle opportunities available in our region.

The weekend kicked off with an exciting trip to a Killam Wheat Kings Jr. B hockey game, followed by a tour of the Killam Agriplex. Saturday morning provided students with hands-on learning at skill stations throughout the Daysland Health Centre, covering endoscopy and scopes, EMS, and ultrasound/IV techniques.

After a busy morning, students enjoyed lunch at Big Willy's Bar at The Heisler Hotel, where they had the chance to network with local healthcare professionals. The afternoon featured a tour of Zimmers Holstein Barn, offering insights into the region’s strong agricultural roots, followed by a visit to Battle River Implements in Killam to explore the vital role of agriculture in the community. The day concluded with a memorable community engagement dinner, complete with a catered meal, a keynote address from Lisa Belanger, live music, and additional networking opportunities with healthcare professionals from the Flagstaff Region.

Sunday began with a behind-the-scenes tour of the Killam Health Centre and an eSIM (Educate, Simulate, Innovate, Motivate) presentation—an innovative provincial simulation program designed to enhance real-world clinical training.

The weekend wrapped up at the Galahad Agriplex Community Cultural Centre, where students enjoyed lunch, bowling, and a final opportunity to reflect on their experiences.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed to making this event a success! Flagstaff County and the FlHAR Committee is proud to support initiatives that highlight rural healthcare opportunities and strengthen our local communities!

Another heartfelt thank you to RhPAP, which sponsors similar events in rural Alberta communities throughout the year. These events provide rural communities with a unique opportunity to make a positive impression on future healthcare professionals by showcasing local amenities and attractions.
