The VFW presented the 2024 VFW Distinguished Fraternal Award to VFW Life member Carol Thomas during the Business Session on July 31, 2024 at the 125th VFW National Convention in Louisville, Kentucky.
The VFW Distinguished Fraternal Award is designed to recognize VFW members or citizens who have furthered the aims or ideas of VFW camaraderie. Nominees display consistent efforts to preserve and strengthen a spirit of good friendship and loyalty among VFW members, assisting the surviving spouses and dependents of deceased members, while also providing assistance to vulnerable and at-risk comrades, above and beyond what others would do.
Relying on her time in the U.S. Navy and her more than two decades as a correctional officer, VFW Life member Carol Thomas believes in the power of rehabilitation, and her tireless support of some of our most vulnerable veterans has culminated in the muster of the first-ever VFW Post at a correctional facility.
Her dedication to this too-often forgotten and written off group of veterans ensures they receive the camaraderie, sense of purpose and support they deserve, often helping to increase their journey to a successful transition back to the civilian world. Her work is truly invaluable.
Her instituting VFW Post 12226 at the Sterling Correctional Facility brings together both VFW-eligible inmates and facility employees, and has truly made an impressive impact on this community of veterans – it’s a living example of walking the walk FOR VETERANS.
