Introducing our 2022 Scientist Spotlight: Dr. Michelle LaRue! Dr. Michelle LaRue is a Penguin Scientist, Ecologist, Associate Professor & Science Communicator and we are excited to highlight her work on Emperor Penguin research. Dr. LaRue's research journey began with analyzing hoary bat guano and expanded to modeling cougar habitats, surveying deer populations, and mapping old-growth forests. In 2007, she joined the University of Minnesota as the GIS lead for the Polar Geospatial Center and later pursued a PhD in Conservation Biology. Her work focuses on using high-resolution satellite imagery to study polar animals, including Emperor and Adélie Penguins, Weddell seals in Antarctica, as well as polar bears, muskoxen and caribou in the Arctic. She has contributed to groundbreaking "species from space" studies, including the first global census of Antarctic penguins.
