Meet February 2022's Artist-in-Residence, John Roach! John Roach, a teacher and artist at Parsons School of Design, uses his curiosity and his art to examine the unique relationship that sound has with the surrounding world. As Zion’s first soundscape Artist-in-Residence, Roach plans to explore the tonal qualities of the canyon. “Sound is full of difficult questions and slippery answers,” says Roach. “I attack these questions in a circuitous and sometimes contrary approach that calls to mind one of my early influences, the author and provocateur Alfred Jarry and his creation of Pataphysics, or ‘the science of iimaginary solutions.’” Roach recognizes that his methods might seem ridiculous to some at first glance. “This exploratory process, while fanciful, always aims to present an altered relationship between sound and its source.”
