Join Rose Hiscock as she delivers the 2021 Stephen Murray-Smith Memorial Lecture, ‘Why we need to tear down the borders between science, design and art in a post-COVID world.’
The last 18 months have demonstrated the role of science, evidence and data in our daily lives. We’ve quickly developed new science literacy with terms such as contact tracing, flattening the curve and community transmission, and we’ve learnt to read data and become attuned to global trends.
Within this reframed world, universities provide an essential service as creators of knowledge, while museums, galleries and cultural institutions have a vital role to play in translating that knowledge.
Rose will draw on her experience working across both the museums and university sectors to explore how cultural institutions act as a conduit for knowledge, and how this helps breaks down the barriers that separate art and science.

About the speaker
Rose Hiscock is the Director Museums and Collections at The University of Melbourne. She has held national leadership roles within the Australian cultural sector and her experience demonstrates a strong focus on the intersection of art and science.
She is currently responsible for the development of Science Gallery Melbourne, a new gallery at The University of Melbourne for young adults and was previously Director of the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences (Powerhouse Museum), Sydney.
About the Stephen Murray-Smith Memorial Lecture
This annual lecture commemorates the contribution made by Stephen Murray-Smith, founding editor of Overland magazine, to Australian intellectual life. The lecture promotes research and debate in the broad areas of Stephen’s interest and influence.
Please note, State Library Victoria has recently acquired the journals of Stephen Murray-Smith, which provide invaluable insight into the vibrancy of cultural life in Victoria in the mid-to-late twentieth century. They will be discoverable via the Library’s catalogue from mid-2022.
