We did it. We made it to the end of 2020. As I tempted as I am to do some sort of champagne punch, current wisdom is dictating against large gatherings, which kind of defeats the purpose. What follows is a tasty, festive drink for two, perfect to ring in the new year.
1 btl champagne or other dry sparkling wine
1.5oz/45ml Campari
1.5oz/45ml rosemary syrup
1.5oz/45ml cranberry juice
Rosemary syrup
I’ve done this many, many times so believe me when I say this process is imprecise, and that’s ok. At the end of the day the level of rosemary flavor is less important than the brix (sweetness level), so as long as the flavor is heavy this will work.
To a saucepan add:
10-12 6" sprigs of fresh rosemary
1.5c/355ml white sugar
1c/235ml water
Bring to a boil stirring constantly, then simmer for 20 minutes. Strain, cool, bottle, and refrigerate.
Initially I was pretty proud of myself at how well this drink came out. I was surprised at just how well these flavors fit together, and surprised that I had never had a drink like this before. On a whim, I googled the ingredients and discovered an article on Epicurious published less than two months ago about a drink by a San Francisco bartender that’s very similar. The preparation and presentation are different, but the ingredients are identical. I’m not kidding. Christian, if you’re reading this, I promise this drink was finished before I heard of yours. If we ever meet IRL drinks are on me.
