Bill Wheeler was a very active member of the Illawarra community who took a keen interest in new bionics research at the University of Wollongong (UOW). In honour of Bill, each year the Bill Wheeler Award is presented to an outstanding UOW Bionics student at this community event.
A prize of $2,000 is awarded to the applicant who best communicates the social impact of their research and how the prize will benefit their work.
The 2021 feature presentation was given by head and neck surgeon Dr Bruce Ashford.
