The 2021 Atlantic hurricane season officially concludes on Nov. 30.
The third most active Atlantic hurricane season on record, it produced 21 named storms and caused roughly $70 billion in damages and more than 160 fatalities. Seven hurricanes formed this season, four of which were considered "major" (Category 3, 4 or 5). These included Hurricanes Grace, Ida, Larry, and Sam.
The GOES East (GOES-16) satellite recorded this imagery of the entire Atlantic basin from its operational location of 75.2 degrees west longitude. This allows us to show storms as they form off the coast of Africa and then enter the Atlantic.
