Can a modern US Navy destroyer defeat the largest battleship ever built? Today in Sea Power, we simulate an epic asymmetric naval battle between a 2020s Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer and the legendary WWII IJN Yamato super battleship.
The Arleigh Burke brings cutting-edge technology, including the AN/SPY radar, Tomahawk cruise missiles, ESSM, SM-2, SM-6, and its versatile 5-inch naval gun. It has incredible detection and missile capabilities—but virtually no armor.
Standing against it is the mighty IJN Yamato, protected by up to 26 inches of armor and one of the toughest citadels ever put to sea. Armed with everything from 25mm anti-aircraft guns to the massive 18.1-inch main guns—the largest naval guns ever mounted on a warship—the Yamato is built to absorb punishment and deliver devastating firepower.
Will modern missiles overcome the Yamato's legendary armor, or will the greatest battleship in history prove that heavy guns and thick steel still reign supreme?
