As the first female and non-Christian president in Americans United's 74-year history, Rachel Laser will discuss how the COVID-19 and racial justice crises in our country have highlighted two truths.
First, that a system that privileges some and disadvantages others jeopardizes all of our freedom and well-being. And second, that the Trump Administration and its religious extremist allies are turning religious freedom into religious privilege to advance the dangerous and harmful conservative political agenda of its religious extremist base.
Laser will explain what religious freedom is, why it’s worth fighting for and why she’s personally invested in the issue.
Then she will provide some shameful examples of our country’s manipulation of religious freedom into religious privilege to fight social progress. She will conclude by sharing how young people — both nonbelievers, and people of faith — can band together in the aftermath of the tragedies and truths of 2020 to reclaim religious freedom once and for all.
